AA as a Requirement for Those Caught Driving Under the Influence

Attending AA meetings has been mandates as a requirement for first time offenders that have been caught drinking and driving. While every county and state has different laws, a general consensus amongst them is to educate those arrested for drinking and driving to help prevent drivers from doing it again.

Some argue that the penalties associated with drinking and driving are too intense, especially for those who had only 2 drinks. But, others agree that strict enforcement is saving lives on the road and off the road.

While a person may not have a drinking problem outside of the incident, they are made aware of the repercussions that can happen in a situation where they do get behind the wheel without consideration of their Blood Alcohol Level. Many arrested for drinking and driving don’t have a problem with alcohol and were simply caught for breaking a minor traffic law.

Still, though, there are many drivers who do exhibit alcoholism as a problem and it is finally discovered and dealt with after the mandatory classes, group meeting and AA meetings are attended.

The law is made to protect and serve, of course. Many agree with this until they are pulled over for something that seems so minor to them. Most people wouldn’t consider themselves a person who drinks and drives. But, studies show that even the slightest bit of alcohol has impairing effects on visibility and perception. In fact, the classes, offenders are required to take, show videos of deaths caused by those who had a low blood alcohol level, but still got behind the wheel. Even the smallest effect can be damaging and the laws are tightening up on proving this.

Each state will have its limits on alcohol, but it’s always a safer bet to save the drinking for a time you have a designated driver. Be safe on the road. It’s not just your life on the line.
