The road to recovery is a long and painful road for a drug or alcohol addict. It is not only a difficult process for the addict themselves but it is just as difficult on you, the family and friends, of an addict. The one area where the process really gets tough is when you begin looking at actually treating the addiction. There is more than enough information on the Internet and through local rehab centers and crisis hotlines to fill volumes of books about it but it’s hard for you to understand what it all means. When looking at rehab facilities there are some things you should consider.
Rehab facilities are structured in different ways. Most of the rehab facilities out there cater to an open door policy where patients can check themselves in or out for treatment. This is a popular way but it certainly isn’t the only way. There are a number of rehab facilities that are a lock down facility. This means once you commit to coming into the center for treatment then you are in the center until the agreed upon time. This time frame is usually a month or slightly longer.
The reason for this is that the thought is that addicts know exactly who they are and what they want and if you give them the leeway they will leave treatment once the addiction cravings become bad enough. They believe that addicts have lacked structure and hard rules. They have taken the easy way out for years and now it is time they face real rules and real consequences.
There are many patients that don’t respond well to this type of treatment at first but as time goes one they learn to adapt to the treatment and learn to love and live in that structure. The fact is there is no sure fire way to treat an addict. There is no way of knowing that when and if they leave that they won’t relapse but the lock down treatments are available and it can be just what an addict needs.
