The days are slow — defined by an addiction, a compulsion that can’t be denied. You watch as a friend shapes himself to a drug, devotes every second to the pleasure of a high (and the crippling lows that always follow). He isn’t as he once was. He has instead… changed, has become a sad parody of himself. A substance defines him. A need controls him. And he refuses to admit it, is certain that he’s still the master of his own body, can return to normalcy if he chooses. He simply doesn’t choose to. He seems content instead to wallow in a disease of his own making.

And you… wait, sure that time will eventually reveal the truth. He’ll sink to depression, anxiety, self-loathing — and you’ll be ready, willing then to help.

You should instead, however, be willing now.

A myth shared among the masses is that addicts must be allowed to fall completely before they can understand the seriousness of their disease. No help should be offered. No attempts at intervention should be made. The lesson must instead be one of patience; and individuals must simply watch, allowing the decline to occur naturally.

This is a mistake.

An addiction must be combated as soon as it’s discovered. Don’t hesitate, thinking this is best for the user. It’s not. Instead it will only let him generate higher tolerances and far more devastating needs — making treatment less likely to succeed later on.

Make your presence known early. Demand that rehab programs be sought and that an effort be made to end the problem. Don’t allow an addiction to continue, certain it will cure itself. It won’t. You must instead fight it, forcing your loved ones to enter counseling and receive help. Without your insistence this will not be done.

Get involved to end addiction.

It’s an all too familiar concept — substance abuse. We recognize it as a concern, a reliance on tastes that shouldn’t even exist. Dependencies can form; health can suffer; and the result is the expected tragedy.

Too often, however, are the causes of that tragedy ignored: thought to be unavoidable, indeterminable. The truth is more certain, though.

Substance abuse — while not always able to be predicted — does often follow specific patterns. And, if these patterns are noted quickly, they can then be better defended against.

The roots of most problems occur in childhood:

One: Early Exposure. Behaviors are learned, understood as common through experience; and individuals who witness their families and friends sampling substances (whether drugs, alcohol, cigarettes or more) will consider the actions to be normal. It is estimated that those who are exposed to these patterns as children are over twice as likely to mimic them later in life — often before they even shed their teenage statuses.

Two: Unstable Environment. Chaos breeds a need to escape. A lack of control demands relief. And unhappy environments (caused by physical or verbal abuse, poverty, divorce, constant relocation or other factors) can cause substance dependency. Individuals who experience unstable home lives are 44 percent more likely to try some form of drugs.

Three: Apathetic Relationships. All children crave affection. They want their parents’ approval, seek to earn security. When it’s not given, however, they become willing to settle for any form of recognition — even anger. Substance abuse can begin as a cry for attention; and those who aren’t cared for will often turn to alcohol or harder drugs. It’s believed that 50 percent of teens will respond in this way.

Recognizing these causes is essential for all individuals. When they can be understood, they can be more effectively combated in adult years — and this can lead to a lessening of abuse and the eventual dependence it can inspire.

An assumption of innocence, a trust in youth: substance abuse is an adult disease, it’s believed. Children aren’t to experience it. They’re instead to be immune — kept protected from the ravages of drugs and alcohol, unaware of what could await when their teenage monikers dissolves.

This is a certainty shared by most parents — and it’s sadly an incorrect one.

Substance abuse is not defined by age. It’s instead caused by a variety of traits: many of which can be predicted in early adolescence. When these traits are recognized they can then be prepared for:

One: Lack of Social Skills. Relationships must be forged in adolescence — this is, it’s understood, the only way to gain essential foundations. Children who lack the ability to interact with their peers, however, may find such foundations impossible to achieve… and may instead turn to drugs as an answer. Those who are unable to form normal friendships with others (exhibiting symptoms of undeveloped communication) are 50 percent more likely to become substance abusers.

Two: Attention Disabilities. Fickleness often defines teenagers. Their moods are fast and their patience is limited. Certain individuals offer extremes, however — through aggressive emotions and unpredictable behaviors, a total lack of focus. This often appears in the form of Attention Deficit Disorder (or similar problems) and can lead to impulsive decisions. These teens can rely on substances to calm their minds and cure their disabilities, even if only temporally. 44 percent of those with attention concerns are estimated to use drugs regularly.

Three: Poor Academic Performances. Education isn’t always an easy thing. Many students struggle with books and statistics, are unable to remember facts. They can’t excel as others do. They instead can offer only the most basic answers — and use substances as a way to compensate. Those who are not gifted academically may rely on drugs to gain a sense of control in their lives and generate confidence (even if it’s momentary). 21 percent of failing students sample substances often.

Note the possible causes of substance abuse to better defend against them — and tame the problem.

If you have had what a lot of people would call a “life destroying” addiction, it may be a wonder that you are even here to be reading this article. But before you go doing some yoga to pat yourself on the back, keep in mind that just because you are winning the war against the physical aspect of your addiction, does not mean that you can simply sit back on your laurels and pretend that this is enough. You have got to be a contributing member of society, if you want to keep living in it. And the best way to do that is through getting educated, and getting yourself a profession. While you might not like it, there are definitely advantages to be had.

Getting your education is a labor of love. While you might not love many of the labors that you will be expected to do, you will probably end up loving where those labors will help you to end up. After all, there is more to a profession than just the Orwellian need to contribute. There is also the potential for a very tasty paycheck down the line. After all, you did not quit using just so you could go work at Mickey D’s, did you?

The hard part is, you are also going to have to join support groups, find new friends, and be truly honest with people. After all, if you continue to do the same old things, you are inevitably going to fall back into the same old life style as you had before. Join an “anonymous” group related to your vice of choice. Make some friends who do not use. And most importantly, rebuild on the relationships you have with your family. You never know — they might just take you back.

The holidays pose a particular challenge for recovering addicts. No matter what substance they abused, the addict’s mantra of “one day at a time” is sorely tested around all the festivities, stresses and celebrations of the holidays. Rather than lock oneself away, learning how to deal with these occasions is an important part of the recovery process and how they can deal with the temptation to relapse.

Holiday parties are a time of particular joy and much alcohol. Drug addicts are encouraged to abstain from alcohol just as alcoholics are, but being around so much liberally flowing alcohol can be too much of a temptation for some. There is, however, power in words. Tell people who offer you drinks, “No thanks, I’m a recovering alcoholic.” They will respect your decision and applaud your strength. If sorely tempted, have somebody on standby that you can call for support.

The stresses of the holidays, financial, emotional or otherwise, are often too much for substance abusers to handle and relapses are a real concern. Recovering addicts need to change their lifestyle as much as anything else. Know the group of people attending parties; if these people are known drug users, just don’t go to the party if you don’t feel strong enough to turn them down.

No matter the addiction, recovering addicts rely on their support system more during the holidays than perhaps any other time of year. Explain to those closest to you exactly what you need from them and how they can help you. If you need extra help, consider talking to a trained therapist. Additionally, treatment centers like those at LaPalomaTreatment.com are there to help if you need support and many have a 24 hour hotline you can call if in need.

Don’t seclude yourself from the celebrations, just know in advance what you’ll have to deal with and go prepared, and call your support if needed.

ContentWhen an alcoholic comes to a place where he or she realizes that alcohol is ruining their life they may not know where to turn. A good place to start is alcoholics anonymous meetings. Most of the people who handle these meetings have been in the same situations. Some of these people have been alcoholics themselves and some have came from homes with an alcoholic. These people are there to share their experiences at the meetings.

The alcoholic will be meeting with others who are going through a similar situation. This could help bring motivation and help deal with his or her situation. Valuable tips can be learned from others because of the varying situations of each alcoholic. One thing good about this is nobody is there to judge because everyone is equal in trying to achieve the same goal. The goal of becoming free from alcohol.

A basket is usually passed around during the meetings to help cover the costs associated with holding these meetings. The people that hold these meetings are volunteers so there is no cost there. The meetings are held either open or closed. During open alcoholics anonymous meeting anyone can attend even family members. In a closed meeting only the alcoholic attends. There are also meetings that are open to a specific group such as women.

A meeting is usually conducted by saying a short prayer and then a moment of meditation. Usually a reading is done from the alcoholic’s anonymous handbook. After this a welcoming of the new members and visitors is given. This is also the time that anniversaries of sobriety are recognized. This will be followed by a member sharing some of their experiences. There could be someone speaking on an alcohol related topic. A prayer will usually conclude the meeting. The members are then free to socialize with other members.

ContentThe effect that alcohol has on the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord) is a depressant, decreasing its activity and as a result reducing anxiety and tension. If alcohol is consumed in a moderate amount it may help a drinker relax and have confidence to socialize more easily. However, any feeling of elevated mental and physical performance is misleading. Tests have shown that even low levels of alcohol in the blood can slow a person’s reactions. The more alcohol that a person drinks the more their concentration and judgment are impaired. However, at this time the drinker’s confidence is increased which could lead to a potentially leathel combination while driving. If an excessive amount of alcohol has been drunk, poisoning or intoxication results, with effects ranging from euphoria to unconsciousness.

In addition to altering the mood and behavior, alcohol has various other effects on the body. As a result of peripheral vasodilation (widening of the small blood vessels), the face becomes flushed and the drinker feels warm, although a greater amount of the body heat is lost. Small amounts of alcohol increase the flow of the gastric juices and will stimulate the appetite and help digestion. Over a long period of time the stomach lining could become inflamed and cause ulcers on the lining. This could also cause hematemesis (vomiting of blood).

A habitual drinker will acquire a tolerance to alcohol. That means that they would have to gradually increase the amount consumed to obtain the same effects. The liver breaks down alcohol at a faster rate, requiring a greater intake to achieve the same blood level. At the same time, the nerve cells in the brain become less responsive to a given amount of alcohol. After many years of drinking an alcoholic will experience a reduced tolerance.

ContentFull understanding of the reason why someone abused drugs and then becomes addicted is not understood. Some think that it is a social behavior problem but nobody knows for sure. The drug abuser is referred to as weak and unable to change their behavior. The whole concept of drug abuse may go much deeper than a moral or social issue. Why do people end up taking drugs? There are alot of underlying causes that need to be analyzed.

It has been rumored among abusers that drugs can boost the self esteem. Depending on what drug is taken will determine what feeling is induced. It may induce an ecstatic state followed by other emotions. The reaction to this will also be determined by the type of drug that has been taken. A popular stimulant like cocaine will boost a person’s self confidence and raise their energy levels. A type of opiate like heroin will enhance a person’s senses to response and bring contentment to them.

People often come to abuse drugs because of everyday problems in their lives that they are having trouble dealing with. They hope to take away the problems by taking drugs. Stress is one of the main reasons that people begin to start taking drugs. This is also one of the main reasons that someone who is a recovering alcoholic or addict goes back to drinking again.

A teenager is often the one that is perceived to be vulnerable to taking drugs. Even though this age group is at a great risk to be users the same is true for all age groups. People in all age groups are at risk to have the tendency to abuse even athletes and intellectuals. These people are often faced with stresses that they have trouble coping with so they turn to drugs for help. They will use this as a test for mental or physical performance improvement.

ContentA medical treatment that is used to rid the body of alcohol is known as detoxification or alcohol detoxification. Within the first 48 hours of not drinking alcohol symptoms will start to appear. The severity of the symptoms will depend on the how serious the addiction is and also how long the person was addicted. Medications can be given by a doctor to help relieve the withdrawal symptoms. There are other ways in which the alcoholic can use to help make the detoxification process easier.

Keeping away from caffeine will help keep you sober if you are a regular drinker. The body can not handle the caffeine if there has been liver damage from alcohol. A study was done by physicians at a hospital in England that it takes twice as long for a person with alcoholic liver disease to process the caffeine than one that does not have alcoholic liver disease. Caffeine and sugar together will bring on anxiety and cause an urge to drink. It is not a good idea to use this as a cure for a hangover either.

Drink lots of water. Water is what helps the body. The body’s functions and immune system are in high demand during the alcohol detoxification process. It will help to strengthen the cells and remove any of the toxins from the body by drinking plenty of water each day. Drinking coffee or any other drink should not be used as a substitute for water.

In most health food stores you will find herbs or other supplements. Sometimes herbs can be just as powerful as drugs so keep that in mind when choosing them. During recovery time the body will be under extreme stress so try to make it as easy possible. It is a process of rebuilding and strenghtening. It will take a little time to get through the process and it will not be easy. However, it will definitely be worth the effort.

A dependence that is chronic and seeking compulsively to use alcohol is known as alcoholism. There have been studies that have shown 50% of the people that are age from 21 to 24 who have died in a traffic accident have drank alcohol before. The alcohol will have a significant effect on the brain and leads to bad judgment. One that has had to much alcohol will not be able to work as efficiently. A person’s reaction will not be responsible as they are when not intoxicated. When most alcoholics are going through withdrawal symptoms they will most likely end up in the emergency room because they are not able to deal with them.

Alcoholism does run in families according to research. However, it can also be related to one’s lifestyle which is the majority of the cause of alcoholism. There are several factors that may put a person at greater risk for developing alcoholism. These would be the friends that you surround yourself with, the amount of stress in your life, and the availability of alcohol. Just because one of the parents in a home is an alcoholic does not mean that their child will become one later. There are so many people out there that have a problem with alcohol even though nobody else in their family history has any problem at all.

One of the main symptoms of alcoholism is an urge to drink that is really strong. You will also see a physical dependence which will also see a separate set of symptoms. These would include nausea, shakes, and anxiety after drinking has ceased. Once drinking has started the alcoholic will have no control of being able to stop. Larger amounts of alcohol will be needed to make them high. All activities of any type will be neglected by the alcoholic.

Finding out that a loved one has a drug addiction can be a very difficult thing to deal with. It is hard to know that someone close to you has been dealing with something like this. You may even find that it is a problem that they have had for some time, and they have been hiding it. Once you find out that a loved one has a drug addiction, you may find that the road is nowhere near done. They may still be denying that they have a problem, and it may come down to you trying to convince them that they need help. This can be a long, difficult journey for everyone involved.

Making the discovery of a drug addiction is only the first step. Trying to get a loved one to admit that they have a problem can be very hard. It is something that may take time and patience. Having an intervention is one way that works in many cases. Unfortunately, it may also make the person upset. They may not feel that they have a problem to deal with. You will need to keep in mind that, until they do admit that they have a problem, a treatment facility like MichaelsHouse.com cannot help them. They may try, but until your loved one is willing to admit that they have a problem, they will be very difficult to help.

You may even find that your loved one wants to stand up to their addiction, but they are having a hard time doing so. In this case, you will want to make sure that they understand that you are there for them, no matter what. One of the hardest things that an addict has to deal with is the possibility that everyone they know and love will abandon them. Let them know this is not the case.

ContentFor anyone that is addicted to alcohol or drugs the proper type of treatment is needed.Alot of addicts have trouble with the process that a detoxification program requires. When looking for a program it might be a good idea to look for one that has a specialist in the area of alcohol addiction even if the addiction is a harder drug. The reason for this being that if the specialist can not help a person overcome alcohol addiction it is not likely that the specialist can help with anything harder to break. The person with the addiction does however need to want to break free from the addiction.

People will not always be serious about wanting to be rid of the addiction. There are two different types of facilities that are used for addiction treatment. One is residential treatment and the other outpatient. Depending on the severity of the addiction will determine the best method of treatment. It is good to find someone that the addict can connect with on the same level of emotions is important. Commitment to staying sober is a key factor because the entire process is not easy. The way to success is taking one step at a time.

It is important for the addict to have a good support system behind them. A person is free to leave a treatment facility anytime that he or she wants. Usually the ones that fail treatment is the ones that think they can do it by theirself. That is why that it is important to constantly stay in contact with a counselor.

Eventually, if a person does not get any type of treatment for their addiction they will have a breaking point. Most of these people will not want to hear about how the are “labeled” as an addict for life. The person will just need to come to terms with their own behavior and be at peace with themselves.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a worldwide fellowship of people who readily admit to being alcoholics and who are there to help each other stay sober. It was started in the year 1935 in the United States. Alcoholics Anonymous now consists of an estimated 67,000 local groups and over 1.5 million members in 92 countries. More than 1 million of those members are in the United States. One group is in all but the smallest towns and several groups are in the large cities. A listing of these locations can be found in the telephone directory.

Membership to Alcoholics Anonymous is open to anyone that has a drinking problem and has a desire to become and/or continue to stay sober. There is no fee to become a member of the organization. The organization relies on contributions from the members. Members are of all races, nationalities, and occupations. The members range from people whose health, careers, and relationships have been totally destroyed by alcoholism to those who sought help at an earlier stage of their illness. Alcoholics Anonymous is not affiliated with a sect, political party, institution, or any other organization. It has a policy with other organizations that fight alcoholism.

There are two types of local Alcoholic Anonymous meetings. At a open meeting, which anyone can attend( including members’ families), people describe their lives as alcoholics and the effect the organization has in helping them refrain from drinking. At closed meetings, which only members can attend, new members are asked to describe their drinking problems and the difficulties of abstaining. Other members who have had the same difficulties can suggest methods of staying sober and ways in which other problems can be surmounted. A program for recovery is suggested. Many members find that helping other alcoholics to stay sober is a way to remain sober themselves.

ContentAlcohol is a serious problem, both mentally and physically for the alcoholic. The alcoholic becomes dependent on the substance and their body will demand more of it. The withdrawal symptoms from it can last up to a few weeks or only few days. These can be symptoms can be mild or they can be serious enough to lead to death. That is why it is important to have help available that is trained for alcoholism.

This is an excessive problem and it is often repeated. When this substance is abused it can create imaginated effects. There may be a change in the alcoholics mood or personality. It can also bring a change in their appearance or friends. While this is going on outside of the body the inside is changing also. The most common being damage to the liver. Their eyes may look red and skin take on a dry appearance.

These symptoms may be mild or become a threat to the life of the addict. The severity will be based on how long the addiction has been going on and how much the addict consumes. Once the withdrawal symptoms begin they will start to get serious within 2 days and can last up to a few weeks.

Some of the mild symptoms would include, sweats, shakes, nausea, headaches, and anxiety. Within a few hours is when the more serious symptoms start. This will usually include hallucinations. These are visual in nature and most likely involve smells or sounds. This is the time when convulsions or seizures may occur.

In the case of more chronic symptoms, delirium tremens will happen. These will begin within a few days after stopping drinking. When these happen medical personnel have no way that they can stop them. If this is not controlled than it could become fatal for the addict.

Addiction counseling is almost always necessary to overcome any addiction. Not only is an addiction difficult to overcome physically, but an addict needs to address the mental and psychological issues that may have contributed to the addiction. The recovery process is long and finding a safe environment in which to discuss your issues is paramount.

Many addicts end up with their addictions due to lack of self worth and the inability to practice self love. Addiction counseling will teach addicts how to love themselves because if you don’t love yourself how can you possibly feel you are worth healing?

Some addicts are so enmeshed in a destructive cycle that they forget how to communicate and even how to acknowledge their feelings. An addiction counselor will help you learn to communicate and to address any feelings that you may be unable to articulate. Learning to read feelings is not as simple as telling time on a Philip Stein watch, yet this kind of dialogue is imperative to a successful recovery.

Learning how to live each day without using your addiction as a crutch is a difficult process. However, this must be accomplished in order to totally overcome your addiction. Waking up each morning and feeling full of life and joy rather than unhealthy and depressed is important to an addict’s mental health. A good addiction counselor will equip the addict with the tools needed to learn to enjoy each day to its fullest instead of impatiently waiting for their next score.

An addiction counselor can even address issues on how to physically take care of yourself. Addicts adopt behaviors that are self destructive to their health and so learning something as simple as how to eat properly is a struggle. An addict cannot fully recover without ensuring that he or she is consuming sufficient nutrition in order to have the physical strength to overcome daily struggles.

The Holidays can be one of the most joyous times of year as friends and family gather for parties, family functions, and work related get-togethers.

For those suffering with depression or drug addiction problems, it’s also the time when drug use can be extremely prevalent as individuals use drugs to avoid their feelings of pain, loneliness, and perhaps difficult financial situations.
While the holidays are known for bringing families together, they are also a great time to assess whether any family members need help through addiction recovery programs.

The holidays tend to bring families together to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year. When the family is all together, it’s a great time to talk about things going on in each other’s lives. Within that context, it’s also a time to notice or hear if anyone in the family is struggling with addiction. With family members in close proximity, old issues or problems tend to rear their ugly heads, and drug-addiction will surface as these difficult memories are revisited.

With the entire family gathered together to celebrate the Holidays, it’s also the perfect time for an intervention to ask and perhaps deal with a family member’s addiction. These interventions can be difficult as the ‘user’ will feel threatened by accusations and the knowledge that someone is trying to take away their crutch.

While the Holidays are known for joyous occasions, they can also be overwhelming for many that are struggling with finances, relationships and life situations. If you suspect a family member has a problem with drug addiction, the Holidays are a great time to assess the depth of the problem, while everyone is home. For more information on signs of drug addiction or steps to intervene, consult your local search engine. It may be difficult, but your family member deserves your concern.

The day was unfortunate, stretched across too long hours. You gave yourself to the demands of a career, accepted the burdens of office politics. You excelled at all efforts but the result now is exhaustion. And you wish only to enjoy the quiet, the taste you know so well. A beverage is chosen, finished quickly. The process is never a slow one. You have no use for caution, no seconds to spare. You want only to forget your life; and so you drink again and again. The pattern repeats throughout the night and leaves you broken for the morning.

Alcoholism is among the most familiar of substances abused by the masses (even as many would think this impossible. They deem all brews instead worthy of their time). Too easily does it become an indulgence, attempted often and rarely controlled. The nature of this problem is experienced therefore by many.

Defined simply: this is a disorder of both mind and body. It’s a dependence upon any form of alcohol, with all sips turned into excesses. A tolerance is quickly established, due to the amounts being consumed, and soon an individual will have to drink more and more to receive even minimal effects. This is a disease – despite its origins in poor choices and a lack of control – and can cause many consequences, such as: sexual dysfunction, suicidal thoughts, liver corruption, heart damage and dementia.

It’s the requirement of alcohol to sustain energy or interest throughout the day; and this makes it all too common.

It is also, however, all too curable.

Treatment is available for this disorder. Institutions like Rehab-International.org seek to educate individuals about alcoholism and how it can be countered. Special programs can be joined to find support and information. And the simple act of refusing to drink can leave a person free from illness.

It’s a choice. It’s a lifestyle change.

When you realize someone you love has a problem with addiction, it can be one of the most traumatic experience of your life. As you struggle to come to terms that this loved one has a problem, you try to find out what the best ways of intervening are in this situation. Intervention can potentially save your loved one’s life.

There are many intervention services and resources you can turn to. The Internet is a wealth of information for those who are not sure where to begin but who are trying to figure out how to come to terms with this realization. There are numerous online support groups that can help you, as well as encourage you to help your loved one.

Other great resources are organizations, such as Nar-anon or Alco-non. They have meetings in almost every major and small city around the country. Most chapters allow both addicts and non-addicts to attend meeting regularly. Some separate the addicts from the family members so that each has a support group and can share freely without being intimidated.

Family intervention is usually the first option this is when a family member or a group of family members tries to sit the addict down to discuss the potential problem. This has to be handled very delicately so as not to alienate the addict. Screaming, accusing, and verbal assault will not get the desired results.

Another avenue to explore is mediated intervention. This is when a professional comes into the home to help the family confront the addict and make sure the dialogue does not do more harm than good.

Regardless of how you go about intervening, an intervention is necessary if a life is at stake. The negative repercussion of standing idly by and seeing your loved one deteriorate before your eyes is much more painful than any conversation you may have.

As you know, alcohol is a legal drug although most people do not think of it as a drug. Some people use it to celebrate a grand occasion others choose to drink until they pass out. Today you will learn to recognize the symptoms of alcohol abuse. When people begin to drink alcohol they do not intend to become addicted to it, it happens over a period of time.

The following are symptoms of an alcoholic. First the person begins to avoid family and friends and hide the fact that they are drinking. They have a tendency to drink alone or drink with people who drink as much or more than they do. Some people drink to escape their problems and obviously when they are sober the problem is still there. Depression and drinking go hand in hand as the alcoholic feels as if alcohol deadens the pain so it gives them an excuse to get drunk.

Often alcoholics will lie about how much they had to drink. Again they do not want anyone to know they have a problem with alcohol or are not ready to admit it to themselves. They must have a drink to start the day with before they go to work, and they put alcohol in a cup so no one knows what is in the cup and drink it at work. Most of the time someone will notice changes in the person and eventually they lose their job.

The alcohol abuser drinks more and more to get a high when before one or two drinks would get them a buzz. Despite all of that there are numerous programs available to help the person who is addicted to alcohol. You can not force someone to get help, if they want it they have to ask for it and then the road to recovery can start.

You or a loved one has just successfully completed drug rehab California-style treatment. The experiences were tough, and yet, you came through them with flying colors. You feel confident that it was all worth it and you are ready to return to your life. However, you really can’t return to your previous lifestyle and the friends with whom you used to do drugs.

Your new goal is to prevent a relapse into drug abuse. While the actual detox and treatment may have been difficult, the hardest part is yet to come. Treatment programs are usually designed to get you through a short period of time during which you quit using drugs. However, the subsequent weeks can be filled with confusion and depression that can trigger a relapse. Remember that relapses can occur a long time, even years, after treatment is completed. Unfortunately, statistics show that the likelihood of a relapse is very high.

Relapse can occur because something prompts the former abuser to want to turn to drugs again. Abusers call them triggers. They’re smells, people, and images that can make a person want to do drugs. For example, seeing images of drugs in the media can be a trigger. These triggers are difficult to resist so the abuser tries to avoid them.

Friends, however, are the most significant trigger. Again, the person must avoid his or her former friends who were involved with drugs. This can be especially difficult if these are friends the abuser has known for a long time. Obviously, avoiding drug dealers is a very important step in relapse prevention.

Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regime can also help prevent a relapse. These things will help reduce depression, reinforce a positive attitude, and provide overall good health. Therapy sessions with a mental health professional can also be very beneficial. Twelve-step programs are also a good deterrent.

Anyone who’s ever been through drug rehab knows that it can take time in order to get clean. Some people get through a rehab facility the first time successfully and they never go back to using or abusing drugs. Others keep going back because they go back to their abusive ways after they get out. That seems to be a common problem with celebrities, but it happens to average, everyday people, too. No matter where you are in your efforts to get clean, though, don’t give up on it. Even if you make a mistake, that’s not a reason to go back to your old way of life.

It takes a real effort to get clean and stay that way, but the rewards are far more important. They can seriously outweigh any costs you might feel that you’re paying – both financially and in other ways – by going through rehab. When you get out, make sure you surround yourself with friends and family members who are supportive to you and what you’re trying to do. If you go back to hanging out with people who abuse drugs, it’s very easy for you to get back into that lifestyle.

Avoid anyone who’s not trying to help you stay clean, and avoid places where you used to go back when you abused drugs. Also, be careful if your doctor prescribes any medication for you. Ask if it’s addictive, and be honest about your past history. It might be better for you to try other treatments or take a different medication, but your doctor won’t know that unless he or she knows your history of drug abuse. Give yourself permission to take time to recover on a mental level, too, because life will be very different for you. You’ll need a little while to get used to it.

1.	Once you have chosen your program, get educated on everything that will be required of you. Understand how the program is run and what their philosophy is.
2.	Rehab programs will usually have other facilities that are available to the patients. Get a feeling for what you might take advantage of.
3.	Understand whether your chosen program is a full day, 24- hour program or only part time. Know the amount of time expected of you.
4.	Is there a detox program and center available? This is a huge plus if there is one available. Most rehabilitation programs will offer them. It is a very important step in recovery, so be sure that you can take part in that.
5.	If you are only going to be there part time, be sure that care is offered still on a day or time that you might need it. You want the flexibility of having that option should you need the support.
6.	After the recovery program is over, you want a program that allows you to come in for maintenance. Be sure that you program offers this type of care after the program is complete, to ensure that you stay clean and sober after all of your hard work.
7.	Understand medications, or holistic treatments that will be administered so that you are not surprised and can prepare.

With proper research on the internet and in person visits, you will be well on your way to a successful recovery.

There are a variety of detox diets that are available and most of them will work. There are those where you don’t eat any solid food and only have liquids that are fresh juices from vegetables and fruit. There are also detox diets that let you eat, but you are limited to vegetables, beans, rice and fruit.

Before you begin the diet, your body is always adapting to whatever you are eating now and whatever toxins are already in your body. The purpose of a detox diet is to eliminate these toxins. When you do, you begin to see benefits in all areas.
Some of the most common side effects in the very beginning is feeling tired. This is because your body is withdrawing from things like caffeine. You may also feel some nausea as the toxins begin to make their way out of your body. This happen through your colon. Your colon is being cleansed in the best way when you detox. If you have ever suffered from constipation, you will be relieved of that when you detox.

When you detox you will also be taking in a lot of water, which helps in the elimination process. The water helps to flush everything out your body. This is very important as the more toxins that are being released, the more poisonous they can be to your body, so you want to encourage them to get out. This will also help with any stomach upset or fatigue.

When done properly, your body can experience amazing benefits by detoxing. There are also special herbs that you can take that aid in the detoxification process. The most important consideration is to flush all of the toxins out of your body. As you stop eating the poisons and toxins they begin to surface and the purpose of the herbs and water is to get them out as smoothly and quickly as possible. The better you feel, the more you know the detox is working and the toxins are less and less.

Most people will go on a detox diet to relieve themselves of illnesses that are usually caused by a build up of toxins and poisons in their bodies. This can come from processed foods, too much caffeine, alcohol or narcotics. But, it is not a cure.

People will generally feel better and actually even amazing once they rid themselves of the toxins. It is undoubtedly a healthy thing to do if suffering from a disease. However, it is best to have a realistic expectation when going on a detox diet.

Detox dieting is not a cure for cancer. While, the start of cancer cells may do to a build up of toxins in the body, the detox does not rid your body of cancer cells. Again, it is a healthy choice to eat healthy and detox your body of toxins if you have a disease, but it should not replace recommended medical care and treatment.

Weight loss is one of the most common side effects that comes with a detox diet. This happens from loss of water weight and excess bloating, loss of fat cells and because you are eating a significantly less amount of food than normal. But, just because you lose the weight, it does not mean that you are cured of weight gain. In order to maintain the lost weight, you must continue to eat well. If you return to the previous eating habits, the weight will return as will the toxins.

Detox is also not a solution for any depression on mental diseases even though most people will notice that they do feel emotionally lifted and happier after detoxing.

There are extremely good benefits that people experience after detoxing and some are nothing less than amazing. But, when doing a detox, the person on the diet should always expect that they will eliminate toxins and they will receive heightened benefits in how they feel and how they function. They should not expect cures to disease.

Is going on a detox diet, a lifestyle type diet? While eating healthy is a great way to maintain weight, there is a vast difference between detox dieting and healthy weight loss dieting.

Detox dieting limits your food and variety of food greatly. A healthy long term diet allows you a variety of food, but within moderate amounts.

Detox dieting does result in weight loss because of the body cleanse that takes place. There is a limit on the intake of calories and because of the quality of foods and increase in fluids, the fat and other toxins are released out of the body in a more efficient manner, which leads to a quicker weight loss.

However, staying on a detox diet for a long time may not be healthy. A detox diet limits you to certain foods and doesn’t contain a variety of foods. The reason you are instructed to eat only certain foods on a detox diet is because of the way they travel through your system when digested. They aid in the eliminiation process and they don’t add any toxins.

It is normal to build up toxins in the body. Everyone has them. It is just a good idea to clean yourself of the build up every so often. Then your body will function better and digest all of the other foods in a better manner.

A detox diet, though, is a great way to jumpstart your body into healthy eating for the longer term diet. Just be sure to find the right detox plan for you. Some people are very sensitive to the extreme detox diets and find themselves sick from it. This may be because of the amount of toxins currently in their body. Others can handle it. Obviously, if you can handle an extreme detox then go for it. But, if you are sensitive to dramatic changes, then you should opt for a detox plan that is less harsh on the system and not so strict with foods and still generates the detox benefits.

Detoxing is a great way to jumpstart your body into healthy living. It is especially helpful when coming off any sort of an addition.
It can take as little as ten days to really transform yourself with the proper detox diet. We are going to learn how to do this in this article. Remember, though, that in order to get the best result, you have to put forth your best effort.

In this 10 day fast, you begin wit no eating for 1 full, 24 hour day. Ouch! But, it’s an important start. The only thing you can have is water and you should have at least 2 liters of water to achieve the maximum results.

This fast will prevent you from putting any more toxins into your body and for your body to automatically go into a cleansing mode. All of your body parts will be on a break. Your digestive system will have some time off and actually be able to heal itself.
After the 24 hour fast, avoid caffeine, sodas, alcohol, red meat, dairy, pork, wheat products, processed foods, or fast foods.

For the following 9 days, you can eat legumes in place of rice, pasta, bread etc. If you can, buy organic of everything that you do eat, so that you are not putting back toxins from pesticides. Vegetables in as many colors as you can gather are very good during this time. You can cook them, but it is even better to have them more on the raw side. You can also have fruit. Eat as many fruit and vegetables as you want. The antioxidants and free radicals in the veggies and fruit will really help eliminate the toxins.
Fish, eggs and white meat (besides pork) are allowed as well. Don’t be afraid to use spices when you cook your meat. It will taste great and the natural effects of them will be great at this time.

And that’s all you need to be on your way to a healthier you!

Look at the following questions and assess whether you might have a problem with your prescription drugs.

Do you ever question that you are taking too many prescriptive drugs?
Does your family question how many drugs you are taking?
Do your friends comment on the frequency you take medications?
Do you have any guilty about the drugs that you take?
Do you feel the need to take medication to calm you down or to pep you up?

If you answered yes to four or more of the above questions, then maybe you need to take a further look into your use of prescription drugs.

It can be easy to get addicted to a drug, especially when it is prescribed. In the beginning, you have less guilt over how much you take because, after all, it was prescribed.

If you think it might be a problem, consider talking to your doctor and evaluating what it is that you are taking. If you are about to start taking a medication that can be habit forming, ask your doctor of the possible side effects and how much you should be taking.

Do not exceed the amount you are instructed to take and make sure you and your doctor are aware of the potential effects of the drug mixed with other medications you might be taking.

Before you begin a medication, make sure that your doctor is aware of your medical history, Medical and health care professionals have a way of screening you for possible future addictions with medications.

If you find that you may possible have a problem with being addicted to your medication, there is help. With anything, the first step is to take responsibility. Your doctor is there to help you, especially if he or she is the one that prescribed it for you. Take advantage of the help they have to offer and if needed you can enter a treatment and recovery program so that you can heal from the addiction.

Families with teen girls might be astounded to hear that teenage girls are showing to be more susceptible to forming drinking and substance abuse troubles than their teenage boy peers. A survey done by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America discovered that these young females are more prone to drug and alcohol abuse because they are more vulnerable to use such substances to make themselves feel better about common teen issues.

Particularly, it’s the girls over the boys that view taking such substances as a benefit and a form of self-medication.

Stated reasons that girls are using drugs and alcohol are because:
-	Drugs help them deal with the problems they face at home with their siblings, parents and family.
-	They feel that it helps them to stop thinking about difficulties they are having at home, at school and with their friends.
-	They don’t feel that addiction is really a problem.
That last reason is frightening. The percentage of girls that abstain from substance abuse, and don’t wish to hang around others that do use, has lowered. The percentage of girls that don’t believe it is a big problem and just something fun and innocent to do is rising.
Teenage girls deal with a lot of pressures when it comes to society. A large focus is on what they look like and how they are perceived by others. Using drugs and alcohol is a way for them to temporarily feel good and let go of inhibitions and insecurities. However, once it wears off, the problems increase.

While the problem is huge with teenage girls, it is still a large issue with boys as well. In fact, the same studies are showing that boys are using marijuana, alcohol and other drugs in social settings to allow them to relax more.
It’s highly recommended that parents, grandparents, teachers, legal guardians, and all adults really involved in your teen’s life, really give a lot of awareness to the needs of these teens. Mental health, as well as physical health, are extremely important to monitor at this delicate age.

So, you have made the decision to get help. You have already taken the biggest step into bettering your life and those around you. Congratulations are definitely in order!

If you are going to be away for a while then you need to prepare yourself. Here are 3 simple steps to take so that you don’t feel overwhelmed with all that is happening.

1.	You’ll need to get your home in place. You will feel so much better coming back to a life that is in order. You are leaving to get yourself healthy. It would not help to come back to chaos. Make a list of things that you take care of on a daily basis, like children, pets, plants, bills etc. Make a list of these things and assign them to those who can help. Start making phone calls and you will actually feel good to know how many people are willing to help.
2.	Have you picked the place you are going to? If you are able to choose the rehabilitation place you are gong to, then take the time to really check into them. There is a range of programs available and you should choose based on the one that you believe will be the most effective to your goals. There are the programs that follow the AA or 12 Step program. There are those that utilize drugs for addictions. There are also those that use holistic methods for detoxing and rehabilitating. Your reason and your addiction will aid in your choosing. Also, consider the success and failure rate of each method.
3.	Once you have decided on where you are going, prepare to be there for at least a month. You will be living there and will have access to phones, computers, laundry utilities and most necessities. Just be sure to pack things that will allow you to participate in the activities they have scheduled for you.

Once you are packed and things in your home are in order, take a deep breath and welcome the new changes and new beginning of your life!

The first step to recovering from an addiction is to detox the drugs from your system. Anything that stays in the system related to the addictive drugs will only cause more symptoms of cravings and withdrawal.

Commit yourself to a healthier life and recovery by following this detox advice.

The first thing you want to do, of course, is abstain from any substance. You will want to drink at least 64 ounces of fluid a day. It doesn’t have to be water. It can be juice or decaffeinated herbal teas. Try to stick with healthy fluids. These fluids will help you eliminate the toxins more quickly.

The next thing is to try and only stick with the fluids and avoid food. When you aren’t eating, your body won’t be utilizing it’s energy to digest food and instead it will work towards cleansing your body of the toxins. Just like when you are ill, you have no appetite. This is because your body knows what it is doing and it is putting its energy towards making you healthy. When you fast, your body will work more quickly and effectively. You only need to stick to this for a day and two is great.

On to the third exercise. For the first few days, you won’t want to do anything. But, once you have enough energy to move around, do it! Even if you don’t need to lose fat, losing any fat that you do have will aid in the detox as many of the toxins are stored in the fat cells. Anything you enjoy doing will be beneficial as long as you are moving and allowing your body to move the toxins through. The sweating and oxygen exchange will be very healing.

Eat healthy foods that are free of chemicals and are natural. Remember, you are detoxing, so you want to get rid of anything that is toxic and preservatives and pesticides are considered toxins.

If you can stick to the above steps an even add herbal supplements and vitamins to your regimen, you will be feeling fabulous in no time. Enjoy the healthier you!

Smoking is one of the most common addictions and because many revere it as something less serious than alcohol or drug addictions, the incentive to stop is not as great. But, study after study proves that smoking is a dangerous habit. While it may not impair judgment as alcohol or drugs will, it has lifetime effects on the body resulting in cancer and even death.

However, the sooner one stops smoking, the sooner the physical damage can begin to repair.

Every person is different when it comes to stopping an addiction. With every addiction, comes various methods to stop and rehabilitate. Smoking is a tough habit to kick and the first step is the having the commitment and motivation to actually stop. Without that intent desire, the cravings will win.

Nicotine is very addictive and it won’t be easy to stop cold turkey. While, many people have done it before, it is not an easy quest. The best way to quit, is to follow a program of some sort.

Did you know that nicotine is as addictive as cocaine and even heroine? An addiction forms when your body becomes dependent on the chemical. This happens on a physical level as well as a mental and emotional level. You know you are addicted when you stop for a short period of time and you soon have immense cravings for the chemical. With smoking, it is the nicotine. Your body must have the nicotine in order to feel normal again. When you stop, you experience withdrawals, like irritability, attention disorders, anxiety, sleep disorders, feeling depressed, getting dizzy, experiencing headaches and more hunger than normal. This is when your body starts telling you that you need more of that chemical.

But, if you can get through those withdrawals then you can beat the addiction. It’s the hardest part of quitting. The extreme withdrawal period usually lasts about two to three days for most people. After this period, it becomes much easier to get through. Signing up with a program can really help through this time.

Most people think that people with anorexia are vane and self-absorbed. They view those with the disorder as being out of control with how they look. But, the disease goes way beyond that. Anorexia is something that is like an addiction and it stems from a psychological disorder. Like any addiction, it requires treatment and rehabilitation.

The first part of treating an anorexic is getting them the nutritional support they need to be physically strong enough to withstand the treatment as a whole. The biggest risk to the anorexic is the physical damage that comes as a result from not eating. It affects every single aspect of the person, physically, mentally and emotionally. If the person is unwilling to eat in the beginning stages of recovery then intravenous feeding may be necessary.

Once the nutritional needs are being met, then the person will be advised to start some sort of therapy. This can be done one on one with a therapist or in a group setting. Both methods have been proven to be very effective. This helps to get to the root of the problem that led to the anorexia. They address problems like low self esteem, body images, family settings and anything in their life that led them to feel inadequate and undeserving of living. The act of not eating is the act of not feeling deserving of food and life.

Through effective therapy, the person is able to like and love themselves and feel deserving.

Once the person has made considerable recovery, there is always recommended maintenance. Like, any disorder or addiction, it can be triggered and activated again if not maintained and kept under control. This is why follow-ups and long-term care is essential for the optimal recovery.

Depending on the situation, those suffering from anorexia can seek treatment in an outpatient type setting or within an inpatient hospital, which is most effective for severe cases. Doctors are a great resource for such programs

When recovering from drug abuse, or when faced with situations which may otherwise pressure a person into using drugs, it’s important to find a substitute for the high. This certainly doesn’t mean switching from one drug to another. Luckily, there are ways to achieve a high that don’t require drugs and can help users break away from addiction more easily, and which can help a person deal with stressful situations.

Exercise:

It’s common knowledge that exercise can give you a rush of endorphins. What is less known is how easy this really is. As little as twenty minutes of walking can help create a sense of tension relief, lifting one’s mood notably. Greater degrees of exercise can be used for even more powerful effects.

Sunlight:

Exposure to sunlight releases melanin into the body and provides much needed vitamin D. Simply standing in a sunny area for a few minutes can help mental and physical health. For those who struggle with deficiencies in these areas, seasonal depression, or mood disorders, sunlight can greatly help restore emotional equilibrium.

Laughter:

Watching an amusing television show or movie can be one of the best ways of coping with anxiety. The phrase “laughter is the best medicine” is more than just talk. This powerful destressor alleviates mental and physical tension and has profound impact on human chemical systems.

Cold:

Exposure to cold prompts the body to release a number of chemicals that improve focus, decrease anxiety, and create a greater sense of awareness. Lowering the temperature of your home just a few degrees can be helpful. For those looking for more extreme aid, taking a cold shower can provide a significant chemical relief.

These natural highs can be a great way to break from cravings, but these solutions may not work for everyone. If a serious drug problem exists, using a drug treatment center is generally an advisable course of action.

There is a spectrum of drug and alcohol use that begins at using the substance and abusing the substance to becoming addicted to the substance. When the user loses control and has behavioral impairment because of the substance, they are then considered to have an addiction.

While use and abuse of any substance is damaging, there is a point when a user goes from being able to do without it to feeling that they can’t function unless they have it. When it becomes an involuntary action to use alcohol or drugs, it is an addiction. Often, when it reaches this point, the only way to recover is through a rehabilitation program.

As the user or abuser uses the substance, the brain becomes used to it. The more they use it, the more the brain develops a dependency on it. Once the change made in the brain is big enough, the using become compulsive. It then becomes more dangerous because more and more of the substance is required to achieve the original effects. The more that is used, the more the brain and body adapt to it. The user begins to need it just to feel normal and needs to keep increasing the substance to feel the same high or euphoria. Once it starts to wear off, the user goes through withdrawals until they have more.

As the problem continues, more problems incur. The issue is no longer just a physical issue from the substance. It becomes a behavioral issue. When seeking help, the addict has many things to address, like what initiated the first use and why they felt the need to continue to use. There are deep rooted issues in regards to any type of self-inflicted abuse.

It’s hard work to overcome an addiction as the addict has more than just the addiction alone to deal with. However, with help, they can overcome and actually come out stronger as a person then they were before the use was a problem at all.

One of the worst parts of seeing a doctor has nothing to do with the doctor himself. It’s about going to the pharmacy afterward. While pharmacies are helpful in getting you the medication you need, just like with complex car insurance quotes, there are a lot of questions that can come up. So, if you are going to make a trip to the pharmacy, there are a few general rules you need to stick to in order to prevent a headache.

Stay Away from Heavy Traffic Times

Right after work, during lunch time, and on Mondays are the busiest times for a pharmacy. If you go in at this time, you should expect to wait longer than if you are coming in during the mid afternoon or on an off day. Pharmacies do their best to accommodate the high demand, but that doesn’t mean they can handle everyone who comes in immediately.

Give Refills Time

You assume you have refills left because your bottle says you do, but that doesn’t necessarily make it true. It could be an old bottle, there could be a new prescription, or it simply could be that your refills have expired. If this is the case, there is going to be an issue with getting it refilled on time. This means you have to get in early and give them time to get it ready for you.

Pharmacists Have Questions

Just because your doctor explained the details of medication to you doesn’t mean they wrote it clearly on the script. If this is the case, the pharmacist is going to have to clarify. There are miscommunications that happen, but you would rather have the pharmacist be sure or fast? If they fill it wrong, that could spell trouble for you and for them.

While taking medication for high blood pressure will probably not land you in a drug treatment center, some patients have the desire to maintain a drug-free lifestyle if possible. So if you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, you may be able to control it without medication. Here are a few tips that can help you with your endeavor to control your blood pressure without medication.

Control your waistline and watch your diet. Blood pressure is almost always tied to weight. You can decrease your blood pressure by simply losing 10 pounds.

Engage in regular physical activity. Medical and health professionals recommend that adults should engage in 30 to 60 minutes of activities most days of the week. Even if you are just starting an exercise program, you should be able to see a difference in your blood pressure within a few weeks.

Maintain a healthy diet. You can lower your blood pressure by consuming a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. You should also try to reduce the consumption of high fat foods.

Lower your sodium intake. Just slightly reducing the salt in your food can help your blood pressure. Try to consume no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day if you are trying to control your high blood pressure.

Limit alcohol consumption. Limited quantities of alcohol has been shown to decrease blood pressure but the benefit is lost if you drink too much. Drinking more than a moderate amount (two drinks per day from men, one per day for women) will potentially raise your blood pressure.

Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. The nicotine in tobacco — including secondhand smoke and smokeless tobacco — can raise your blood pressure. This in addition to other smoking danger.

Check with your physician regularly to make sure you are achieving your goals of lowering your blood pressure.

Symptoms of withdrawal from any type of drug can be very serious. Withdrawal symptoms vary from drug to drug, as well as from person to person. Sometimes, the withdrawal can prove fatal. Some drugs will produce more of a physical withdrawal, while others have more emotional symptoms.

Common symptoms of emotion withdrawal are anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, and depression. These are frequently seen when someone quits smoking, especially when someone quits "cold turkey". These symptoms can be just as dangerous as physical symptoms, and in some cases can lead to more serious physical symptoms.

Physical symptoms include racing heart, sweating, difficulty breathing, and nausea. Physical withdrawal symptoms are frequently seen when quitting alcohol, opiates, and some prescription drugs.

Stopping substances such as alcohol and tranquilizers all of a sudden can produce the most deadly, dangerous symptoms. These symptoms can include grand mal seizures, heart attacks and strokes, and hallucinations. When quitting these types of substances, medical attention and supervision is highly suggested.

Not everyone who stops taking a substance experiences withdrawal symptoms. Different drugs may affect a person differently, as well. If you are planning on quitting a substance, whether it is a prescription drug, alcohol, or other drug, you will want to consult with your doctor. They will be able to monitor your withdrawal and foresee any possible complications.

Symptoms of withdrawal from any substance can be very difficult to deal with. It is highly recommended that you have a support system when withdrawing from any drug. The longer you have been using the substance, the more likely you are to experience withdrawal symptoms.

There are many options for help when quitting any type of substance. Contacting your doctor is a good way to start. There are also groups, such as AA that can be useful. Other options could include contacting a religious figure that you trust.

Exercise is important for good health. Most people don’t get enough of it, but some avoid it because they aren’t sure it’s safe for them. If you’re one of those people, a good physical at your doctor’s office can be a great way to make sure that you’re healthy enough for the exercise routine you’re thinking about. Once you have the all clear from your doctor, you should still make sure to monitor yourself. That can help you feel safer, and can also show you whether you’re getting the maximum benefit from the exercise that you’re getting.

For example, with a finger pulse oximeter you can monitor your heart rate and how much oxygen you’re getting into your bloodstream. You don’t want your oxygen levels to drop too low or your heart rate to get too high, so it’s a good idea to monitor these things, especially when you first start an exercise program and you aren’t quite sure how well it’s going to go. Take it easy right at first, and don’t overdo it. It took you time to get out of shape, so it will also take you time to get fit again. If you try to do it all at once, you could put yourself at risk for injury.

If you stay on track with your exercise routine and pay attention to your health and well-being while you’re exercising, you’ll be more likely to continue a routine that will lead to good health. You’ll also be much more likely to keep exercise as a life-long habit if you start out slowly, work into a longer routine and do something that you really enjoy. Otherwise, you’ll quickly get bored or tired of exercising, and you’ll be right back where you started. Avoiding that is the key to remaining successful with any exercise routine.

Many people today like to try natural remedies for common ailments, before going to the doctor. There can be side effects from natural remedies, just as there are with manufactured drugs, though in general, they tend to be less severe.

Natural remedies generally come from plants and plant parts. Herbal and natural remedies are much more popular in the eastern part of the world than in the western. In western culture, there are many natural remedies that some people may not recognize as a "natural remedy".

If you have ever used Aloe Vera for sunburns or any other type of burn, you have used a natural remedy. The gel from an Aloe Vera plant can help sooth and heal burns. Chamomile tea can help soothe muscles and relax a tense person. Coffee has been used for many years as a stimulant. The natural caffeine in coffee can help keep a person alert, as well as speed the results of pain relievers. Ginger has been used both for helping motion sickness, as well as morning sickness for pregnant women. Garlic has been shown to help control cholesterol, as well as an antibiotic.

There are many ways to get natural remedies. One of the most effective, though time consuming methods is to grow an herb garden for you. Many natural food stores also have herbal remedies that you can purchase. Another option is to buy herbal supplements at a pharmacy. These tend to be more processed, and can lose some effectiveness because of that.

There are said to be natural remedies for almost every ailment. Some of them work; others do not work as well. Before taking an herbal remedy, make sure that you do some research. There are many plants and herbs that are not safe for women who are pregnant. Herbal remedies may also have side effects that can be unpleasant.

The HCG diet is the new diet craze. Let’s take a look at the basics of an HCG diet.

HCG is an acronym for Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin. This is a hormone that shows up in human pregnancy. It can also be used for non-pregnant women and men as a weight loss tool. The HCG hormone will help curb cravings and tell the body that the fat in the body can be used for metabolism.

HCG diets can be done through a hormone injection or through pills. Whichever you choose, it will be used until your weight loss goal is achieved. The hormone is then used for about a month longer, in what is called a "maintenance cycle".

When in the second stage of the HCG diet, you will have a two week period of being restricted to 600-800 calories a day. After that, you will be on a diet of 1000-1200 calories a day for a week. The diet is a high protein diet, and therefore protein calories do not count toward the daily totals.

For the HCG diet to work long term, it does require a lifestyle shift. During and after the hormone injections, you will need to adhere to a strict diet. For this reason, as well as possible risks with this diet, it is strongly suggested that you be monitored by a medical professional.

The HCG diet can be a very good start to a healthier lifestyle. It can help overweight people shed some much needed weight. It also promotes a very healthy diet, focusing on a high protein, low calorie diet.

HCG diets can be fairly expensive, especially when compared to traditional diets, eating healthy, and exercising. This is a potential negative for many people, who feel they cannot afford it. Also, most insurance companies do not cover the HCG diet.

Understanding Addictions

There are many nuances to understanding addictions and what some of the underlying causes of attracting addictive behavior may be. Much of what is a mystery in addictive behavior is understanding the psyche of the person who has the dependency. It stands to reason that if a person fully realized the damaging effect the drugs or alcohol was having on his body that he would stop using the substance. But this isn’t the case. This can be difficult for people to understand, especially when they have never struggled with an addiction or been around a person addicted to drugs. For them it seems like a person should be able to stop using or give up the solution at a moment’s notice.

Counseling for Overcoming Addictions

In addiction counseling, professionals work with patients to bring them to a point of rehabilitation and recovery. Their experience and knowledge equip them with the necessary tools they need to help addicts overcome the challenges of an addiction so they can work through it. Since addictions can be quite powerful, time, patience, and understanding are key elements to help addicts be successful in their rehab efforts. The residuals of drug abuse, like crystal meth effects, can be daunting on a person’s body, but a well-equipped drug recovery center can provide users with everything they need to rehabilitate effectively.

The Road to Addiction Recovery

Addiction recovery is not only welcomed, but it’s possible with the right professional personnel and resources to handle the situation. A drug rehab facility will propose a customized plan of treatment for the patient and the problem. The plan of management for the case can last for any amount of time, and it can vary from person to person. In due time, patients will begin to make strides and will see favorable results if they remain diligent and consistent in their treatment.

Leaving rehab is all about work. There is more than enough work to be done at home. There is the work of getting your life back together piece by piece. The job, school, money, and health come along with time and commitment and it isn’t something you can change in a day. However, there are other challenges to being clean and sober that are harder in practice than they seem in theory.

The problem at hand is the problem of the friends you were keeping before you went into rehab. When you were at the depths of your addiction your friends were changing. Those that loved and supported you probably felt distance from you because of your addiction. Those that were around were probably those that were suffering with their own addiction as well. Now that you are out, how do you deal with those people?

Friendship is important and there is no mistaking that but your sobriety is bigger and more important than all of that so it is paramount that those you associate with in your life are those that are committed not only to your sobriety but their own.

A friend who claims to still want to do drugs but is committed to your sobriety is fooling themselves and should not fool you. Addicts do not like to be the only user around. Misery loves company so it will only be a matter of time before they justify to you the idea of using again.

This will require you to be direct with them from the beginning. Once you get the opportunity to have a conversation with them you need to let them know how much your sobriety means to you and that if they aren’t going to be clean then you can’t be around them. This means not only using drugs, but having them in their possession. You must remove the temptation in your life whenever you can. If your friends can respect that then there is a chance for the friendship to continue. If not then you are better off without them.

Drug addiction is one of the hardest things in the world to overcome. Millions and millions of dollars every single day is poured into outreach programs and research on how to help people combat this terrible disease of addiction. If someone you know and love is dealing with drug addiction it’s quite possible that you are having to deal with it too. This is not just their problem. This problem affects everyone.

So the question is how do you handle it? It’s not easy to practice tough love, but it’s also not easy to practice a nurturing behavior as you watch someone you care about destroy their lives. Making some simple rules for yourself can help you deal with the addict in your life.

The first thing you have to do is set ground rules, not only for yourself but for the addict themselves. The number one rule is not to enable. This makes you just as guilty as they are. So when an addict asks for money you must tell them no. It doesn’t matter what they tell you or how little they may be asking for. You must assume they are spending that money on drugs and firmly tell them you will not be giving them any money. If they claim they need money for a flat tire, explain to them you would be happy to help them by paying the tire shop in person or over the phone but there will be no transferring of money between the addict.

If an addict wants to enter your home you must make the simple rule that the addict cannot be clearly on drugs and cannot bring drugs into your home. You should feel very right in asking them to empty their pockets, backpack, or purse if you have to. Having drugs in your home is not only unacceptable to you but is something you could get in real trouble for.
Understand these rules may be met with some resistance by the addict. This may even strain your relationship, but you do not want to be an enabler to them.

As your addict loved one comes home it can be a more difficult time than you can prepare yourself for. While there is no question that you are more than profoundly happy to see your loved one get treatment and you are more than glad to see them come home, this doesn’t mean you feel at ease with the situation. You know they need to get better and put in real work but transitioning back to the home life can be tough on both parties. But it doesn’t have to be a struggle all the time. There are ways to make the adjustment easy for all involved.

The first thing to do is rummage the house top to bottom and look for a stash of drugs. You may have covered this before your loved one went to rehab but it needs to be addressed again. An addict is very good at hiding his stashes of drugs all over the house. Check every nook of the house. What you are trying to avoid is a moment where the addict realizes there are drugs there and they take advantage of that and have a relapse.

The other thing that is important is to allow space. When an addict comes home they are dealing with their sober world in a world they have not known as sober. They have the things they need to focus on. They have bad days, They get tempted. They go to meetings. It’s a long process for an addict to feel normal so you must allow them to start to feel good in their own skin.

Also you have to take the bad moods as just simply that: bad moods. Addicts, when recovering, can be very irritable and that can take its toll on you and the rest of the family but know that it is just them trying to cope with their new found sobriety and it can become overwhelming to them. There is a lot for an addict to process when they get back home and know that you are definitely a part of the solution.

Prescription cards are a supplement to your insurance or are helpful to those who are uninsured. They are a way of making prescription drugs more affordable by providing a discount to the card holder. It’s important to understand the proper use of these cards in order to get the maximum benefit for you and your family.

While everyone can use prescription cards, they may not be worthwhile in all situations. Be sure to research the prescription plan in terms of what it offers as well as its rules and regulations to be sure you’re choosing a quality program. Some programs may have eligibility requirements such as income and age. Be sure to inquire about these restrictions when looking into prescription drug cards.

Most card programs cost very little or are free, and some are government run. Others may be intended for those who do not have health insurance in order to help them afford prescription drugs. Some organizations provide discounted drug plans to their members. Two of note are AARP and the United Way.

There are cards that are available to anyone who needs them. They are usually run by a third-party company that negotiates with pharmacies to provide lower cost medicines. There may be a fee involved with some cards, but the savings on prescription drugs may well be worth this cost.

You may also benefit from discount cards associated with certain store. These usually provide a small discount on prescriptions purchased at a particular store. Every little bit counts.

Finally, drug manufacturers themselves provide discount prescription cards to those who may not have prescription plans with their insurance. These are well worth looking into if you need help in paying for your prescription drugs.

Parkinson’s disease is among one of the hardest and most debilitating diseases you can be diagnosed with. It cripples the body and puts you in a constant position to feel out of control. If you have been recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease you should know that the road from here on out gets much harder but luckily the miracles of modern medicine can do wonders to help control some off the symptoms.

One of the most popular or common medications given to Parkinson’s sufferers is a med called Sinimet. Now, as most doctors and pharmacies give out the generic version you are likely to see something called Levodopa/Carbidopa. Those of course are the two ingredients that make up Sinimet. Levodopa is the single most popular drug prescribed for those afflicted with the disease as it creates something called dopamine. Dopamine is very important in brain function. What it does is it is used to tell the muscles on the body what to do and enables them to do it smoothly. A patient with Parkinson’s disease is suffering from a nerve cell break down. So dopamine is created by Levodopa.

Now Carbidopa, just like you might think, really works in tandem with the dopamine agent. This agent not only helps to up the effect of the dopamine agent that is Levodopa but it also helps take off the side effects of the dopamine agent.

Some of the side effects that a patient taking Sinimet might experience is nausea and vomiting which is a rather common occurrence in most medication. However there are some more serious side effects that you should be aware of. There is the possibility of restlessness and even some confusion. This isn’t to detract from the attractiveness of the medication as it has long been thought to be one of the best drugs to treat the difficult disease of Parkinson’s, but it is important to know the risks involved. And with all medication it is important to have a lengthy talk with your doctor before deciding on any medication.

Perhaps you have approached the back wall of a pharmacy only to find that the Sudafed you were looking for is now behind the counter. You reach the counter only to discover you need to have identification to buy this drug.

So why is it that now you have to give them your I.D to buy something that anyone was able to buy in the past? Well, if you can believe it for your own safety. A couple of years ago the lawmakers of Illinois got together and decided to approve the monitoring of all drugs containing pseudoephedrine. Not sure what pseudoephedrine is? Let’s make sure you are aware.

Pseudoephedrine is a drug used to make a more harmful drug called meth-amphetamines. This is a very seriously addictive drug. You might hear news programs where they are talking about crystal meth and if so then they are talking about the same kinds of ingredients that are used in some of the over the counter medicine that you have to go behind a pharmacy for.

So how does this work? Well you give a pharmacy technician your id and they run the drivers license number through the computer and it comes up with whatever pseudoephedrine products you have recently. This is because there is now a limit on the amount you are allowed to purchase. For instance you might by a 24 back of Claritin D but you cannot buy another 24 pack in the same day. All of your purchases are stored in a log and monitored and reviewed by the state. You can choose not have your purchases monitored but then you have to choose not purchase that product.

The manufacturers of these drugs are now coming out with pseudoephedrine free versions of these drugs. You have to make the determination on which drug will work best for you but understand that the law is there in the fight against illegal drugs.

So let’s say there is someone in your life whom you love more than you know but you have a feeling they may be sick. In a normal, conventional situation you would ask them to see a doctor. If the person noticed the symptoms too they would agree and the situation would be dealt with. But what if that persons illness is a drug or alcohol addiction? How do they respond then?

It’s difficult to confront an addict. There are situations where an intervention is in order and those work with varying degrees of success. However, there are times where you might feel forced or obligated to confront them one on one. This is not an easy thing to do but there are ways to make it a lot easier.

First, you have to be sure you know what you are “accusing” them of. Just because one time you saw them intoxicated or just because their behavior hasn’t seemed right doesn’t mean they are an addict. And even if they are, if you come at them with weak or unsure evidence, a true addict will deflate your argument and move on. Addicts can be very manipulative. This is why it’s important to know exactly why you are making this confrontation. What has convinced you that they need help?

The other thing you need to do is to let them know that you care about them. Most people don’t respond well when they feel like they are being attacked. So don’t come at them with hostility or anger. Let them know you are concerned but don’t let them talk you out of it either. Addicts love to make it seem like there is nothing wrong. Like it’s just them having a good time or it’s just a misunderstanding about their behavior. Make sure you let them know you love and care about them but you are not stupid either and you know fully well what is going on.

And be ready for a long battle. Drug addiction isn’t solved in one confrontation, but feel good about getting the process started.

Suffering from alcoholism is a terrible and dreaded disease. While you may attend meetings and work tirelessly to defeat the disease there is no doubt that occasionally you need more than just a wish and a prayer. Thanks to the wonderful advancements in the world of modern medicine it can be much easier to deal with the alcohol abuse through a wonderful medication called Antabuse.

Antabuse, also known by its chemical name as disulfiram, is one of the smartest and most advanced drugs on the market. The way alcohol works is when you drink alcohol is broken down by your liver which is converted ultimately into acetic acid. So the way antabuse works with the abuse of alcohol is the amount of acetaldehyde is about 10 times higher in the body than if you had consumed the same amount of alcohol and yet hadn’t been on antabuse.

So what does this increased level of acetaldehyde due to you? Produces a dreaded hangover. So let’s say you are on antabuse and you down a beer to get your night started, within a few minutes you will start to experience some severe hangover symptoms and they will last anywhere from several minutes to several hours.

What symptoms do you experience? Your skin might flush, there will be nausea, vomiting, terrible headache, confusion, shortness of breath, and perhaps even fainting or collapse. In short it is the worst hangover you can imagine for the least amount of alcohol you have ever drank. Here is where antabuse works in the longterm: your body cannot build an immunity to it. Some medicines are taken but then you can grow a tolerance with it. However the longer you take Antabuse the worse the effects get for you if you consume alcohol.

While the hangover itself is a side effect, the true side effect of Antabuse is a shortness of breath and a tingling in the lower legs. But there is no doubt that if Antabuse is committed to by the patient it can help keep you clean and sober for many years to come.

When a parent is suffering from a crippling addiction to drugs or alcohol it can take its toll on a family. It doesn’t just affect the addict themselves. Kids are often the most at risk to retain long lasting negative effects of a parent dealing with drug and alcohol addiction. So as the spouse of a person with a drug addiction, talking to kids about the condition of the other parent is not an easy or enviable task but if you are careful but direct you can help make the process of dealing with a parent who is addicted go a lot easier.

The first and most important thing to tell the kids is that their mommy or daddy loves them. Kids easily confuse the distant behavior of a parent with not being loved. It is important that this point is hammered home for the children. They need to know that addiction is more about a person not loving themselves than it is about them not loving someone else.

Make sure the children are aware that the problems or the behavior they are seeing is not a reflection on them at all. Sometimes kids think a parent behaves a certain way because they acted out. This is never the case. Explain that they are important and special and the behavior is a separate issue.

If your spouse is about to or is currently receiving treatment for their addiction let the children know that the behavior of their parent will continue to change and may in fact go a little back and forth. Let them know that the parent is trying to get better not just for themselves but for their children.

Make sure you ask the kids if they have any questions. They may not feel comfortable telling you how they feel. But they may have all kinds of questions. It’s hard to prepare for what they might ask but know that you just need to be delicate in it all and reiterate that mom and dad love them no matter what their behavior otherwise suggests.

There has been a lot of talk lately about the electronic cigarette. People want to know whether it’s safe, how well it works and whether it’s worth the cost. It’s vaporized nicotine in a cylinder, and it produces a water vapor instead of actual smoke. Because of that, a person can use an E cigarette anywhere, instead of being restricted by no smoking areas. Whether an electronic cigarette is really safer than a regular cigarette is arguable, though. There aren’t as many chemicals in it, but you’re still inhaling nicotine, which has received mixed results in studies where its health effects were examined.

When people try to quit smoking they often use nicotine patches and gum to help them on that route, and the electronic cigarette would be another tool in that arsenal. Some people might use it to quit, and others will use it just as a substitute for their cigarettes – especially if cigarette prices continue to go up. Anyone who’s using the E cigarette can also use it in places where they can’t smoke, and smoke their normal cigarettes in other places and in their own home. It gives them options and choices that they wouldn’t otherwise have.

E cigarettes are so new that many people are still undecided about them. Not everyone who’s interested in them has had a chance to try them out. Reviews are mixed. That doesn’t mean that they won’t help you quit, though, or that they won’t be a good alternative when you can’t smoke in a particular place. If you’re considering trying the E cigarette, make sure that you read reviews and do your research about it before you try it. That way you can make the best decision about whether you think the E cigarette is safe and whether it will be the right choice for you.
