What Happens in Rehab: A Guide for Alcohol Rehab

Rehab can be a very scary place for substance abusers. You are taking them out of their comfort zone and placing them into an unknown world that is forcing them to see the error of their ways. With the prospect of such a scary experience ahead of them many substance abusers do not succeed when they should because of the sheer fear of the experience.

Here is a quick guide that will help you understand exactly what happens in rehab. It might help take some of the mystery out of it.

Detox. Detox is the first step to rehab that a person will go through. This is to get all the toxins in their body out of their system and allow them to start fresh when they enter rehab. Detox can be a painful process but it is necessary.

Health Check Up. After detox you will go through a health check up that makes sure that you are in good working health. This is to make sure that you are able to complete the rehab program as well as to make sure that you are mentally and physically alright after going through substance abuse.

Group Counseling. There will be a lot of group counseling sessions that allow you to share your experience with others. Group settings allow you to learn from each others experience and see what the next step might be.

Individual Counseling. This allows you to work through your own issues as well as what might have happened during your substance abuse time. This is a very important step in rehab.

AA Meetings. Many rehab programs have in house AA meetings. AA is set up to help you maintain sobriety. By starting to attend these meetings now you’ll make a habit of it and hopefully continue with it when you get out of rehab.
